By Steven English Thursday, August 27th 2009, 15:10 GMT

Nelson PhilippeNelson Philippe has been released from hospital following his accident in practice for last weekend’s IndyCar race at Sears Point.

The 23-year-old Frenchman sustained a concussion and an open fracture of his left foot when he spun over a blind crest and was hit by Will Power.

Both drivers were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial hospital in California, where it was discovered that Philippe also has a hairline fracture of his right fibula.

But he was able to return to his home in South Florida after being fitted with a brace.

Dr Michael Olinger, the IRL’s director of medical services, said: “Nelson underwent surgery to have the foot fracture washed out and repaired.

“After further examination, it was found that he had also suffered a hairline fracture of his right fibula and he was fitted with a brace.”
